- Restoring Hope, Saving Life
Background of Besta Health Foundation
Besta Health Foundation (BHF) is a registered non-governmental, non-profit organization established to improve the lives of cancer patients and their families across Tanzania. The Foundation was officially registered on 3 January 2025 under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act, 2002, with Registration Number: 00NGO/R/7951.
Founded by a team of dedicated healthcare professionals, with Besta Hospital serving as its seed donor and founding institutional partner, BHF was created in response to the growing challenges faced by individuals living with cancer. While access to quality medical treatment remains essential, many patients continue to encounter significant barriers, including financial hardship, delayed diagnosis, limited public awareness, inadequate psychosocial support, and difficulties accessing treatment and follow-up care.
As the philanthropic arm of Besta Hospital, the Foundation mobilizes financial and technical resources, builds strategic partnerships, and implements community-based interventions that complement hospital services. Through these efforts, BHF extends the continuum of cancer care beyond the hospital by ensuring that vulnerable patients receive holistic support throughout their cancer journey.
Recognizing that cancer care extends beyond hospital walls, BHF was established to complement clinical services by providing comprehensive patient support, promoting early detection through community screening programs, strengthening public awareness, facilitating patient navigation, advocating for equitable access to quality cancer care, and empowering survivors to live healthy, productive, and dignified lives. The Foundation also supports capacity building for healthcare providers, cancer research initiatives, and the development of sustainable community cancer programs that contribute to improved national cancer outcomes.
Working in close collaboration with Besta Hospital, Shujaa Cancer Foundation, Associazione Ruvuma Onlus, government institutions, development partners, healthcare providers, academic institutions, private sector organizations, and local communities, BHF is steadily growing into a trusted platform for cancer prevention, patient support, education, research, advocacy, and health system strengthening in Tanzania.
Guided by the principles of compassion, equity, integrity, innovation, and collaboration, BHF is committed to ensuring that every person affected by cancer has access not only to quality medical care but also to the emotional, psychosocial, educational, and financial support necessary to navigate the cancer journey with hope and dignity. Through strategic partnerships and sustainable resource mobilization, the Foundation aspires to contribute meaningfully to reducing the burden of cancer and improving the quality of life for patients, survivors, and their families throughout Tanzania
